Aberystwyth Silver Band says
Goodbye
Aberystwyth Silver Band at
its recent promenade concert was
delighted to make two much deserved
presentations to Lindsay Penney and
Robert Oakes who have recently
graduated from Aberystwyth
University and will be shortly
leaving the band as they return home
to Macclesfield and Nottingham.
The presentations were made on
behalf of the band by Geraint Evans,
the band's musical director in
recognition and appreciation of both
their outstanding contribution and
commitment shown towards the band
over the last four years.

Lindsay, Tenor Horn player and
Secretary of the band was presented
with a cut-glass mug and Robert
Oakes, Cornet player with a pewter
tankard. The band wishes
Lindsay and Robert all the very best
for the future and look forward to
seeing them both soon.

Well done Grady !
The band is delighted to
announce that Grady Hassan, the
band's Eb Bass (Tuba) player has
been accepted into the National
Youth Brass Band of Wales at the age
of 14. Grady is the youngest
player ever to be accepted on Tuba
into the NYBBW. Well done
Grady !

A big thank you from the
band
Aberystwyth Silver Band would
like to thank Aberystwyth Town
Council for their donation of
£650.00 towards the running costs of
the band. The band would also
like to extend its thanks to
Aberystwyth War Memorial Trust for
their donation of £350.00 towards
the purchase of new band ties.
The band is very appreciative of the
generous support it receives and is
currently working hard putting
together its musical programmes for
its series of summer bandstand
concerts.

Congratulations
Aberystwyth Silver Band is delighted to report that a number of its players entered the Urdd National Eisteddford at the end of May at Llanerchaeron, a National Trust property near Aberaeron and took home a number of prizes !
Grady Hassan performed Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto and won the brass section for school years 7 to 9.
Following Grady in the brass section for school years 10 to 13, Huw Evans on Euphonium was also awarded first prize.
The band was well represented at the Eisteddfod - Meleri Pryse, Georgie Evans, Tomos Wells and Gareth Owen also took part in orchestral and choral events and Eilyr Pryse the bands percussionist composed the music for the ceremonial fanfare.

Aberystwyth Silver Band on
Sunday 7th March performed at the
Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff
for the second consecutive year.
The bands programme opened in
traditional brass band style with
the March 'The Contestor', by the
Tredegar born brass band composer,
once referred by Harry Mortimer as
the "Welsh Sousa". The
programme included a number of
'popular' items including Westlife's
'You raised me up'; Freddie
Mercury's, 'Don't stop me now' and
'Musket, Fife and Drum, known to
many as the theme tune to the ITV
television programme ' Soldier,
Soldier', closing with the March,
'Men of Harlech' which features 'Hen
Wlad Fy Nhadau', the 'Land of My
Fathers'.
The band thoroughly enjoyed the
performance it gave at the Wales
Millennium Centre and is already
looking forward to next year !

the band's timpanist, for winning the
poetry Chair in the Tregaron Secondary School
Annual Eisteddfod this month. |

Silver Band
congratulate very
own 'Karate Kid'
Meleri Pryse, a keen
Baritone player in
the band and a pupil
of Ysgol Penweddig
Aberystwyth is also a
Karate champion in
her spare time.
We congratulate her for gaining her
2nd Dan and also receiving the
silver medal at the Welsh Karate
Championships.
Out of thirteen trying Meleri was
the only female to gain this level
in the sport.
Meleri has already been awarded the
bronze medal at the British
Championships.

Meleri will be
wearing another 'hat' on March 7th
when she will be playing for the
Aberystwyth Silver Band on the
Glanfa stage at the Wales
Millennium centre in Cardiff.
