Aberystwyth success at The Forest of Dean Solo, Duet, Quartet and Ensemble Championships

Aberystwyth Silver Band is pleased to announce and congratulate firstly Harvey Hassan (Flugel Horn), who won with Evan Rowbottom the Youth Duet Championships at The Forest of Dean Solo, Duet, Quartet and Ensemble Championships which was held on Sunday 6th July (2008), at Lakers School, in Coleford, Gloucestershire, which attracted over 170 entries.

In addition Harvey, Grady (Eb Bass) and Georgie Evans (Euphonium) all members of Aberystwyth Silver Band entered the Open Quartet Championships, but unfortunately the quartet was not complete as their fourth member was unable to play due to illness, however Dad, Aidan Hassan (Principal Cornet), father of Harvey and Grady came to the rescue and won the section playing Miniature Suite!

The adjudicators were Mr. Brett Baker (Principal Trombone, Black Dyke Band) and Mr. Alan Bourne (RAF St. Athan) who both commented on an extremely high standard of solo playing across the sections when announcing the results and shared many useful and insightful comments with the competitors to assist them on their musical journey.

Harvey, Grady, Georgie and Aidan played their winning piece last night (Tuesday 8th July, 2008), much to their surprise as part of the bands concert programme on Aberystwyth Bandstand.

Our congratulations once again to Harvey, Grady, Georgie, Aidan and members of Aberystwyth Youth Band (under the Musical Directorship of Mr. Alan Phillips), many of which were also in the prizes!

Aberystwyth Say Goodbye

It is always a sad time of year for the band when it has to say goodbye to one of its members who leaves upon having completed his studies at Aberystwyth University.  The band previously announced the departure of its Eb Bass player, David Holmes just before Easter and on the 24th of May the band wished a fond farewell to two further members, Graham Brand, Solo Tenor Horn and Richard White, Percussion at its Annual Band Dinner.

Loyal

Graham Brand has been a loyal member to the band throughout his tenure, previously having played for Llay Welfare Band.  After completing his Bachelors degree in Biochemistry he is returning home to Wrexham.  In addition, the band also said goodbye to Richard White, Percussionist who has completed his Bachelors degree in Biology and likewise is returning home to Gloucester.

Although Richard has only been a member of the band for just over a year, this last year for the Band has undoubtedly been one of the busiest in its history, having recorded a CD entitled "Aberystwyth" and performing at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, whilst fulfilling the band's prominent role in Aberystwyth ceremonial events.

Honorary Members

Chairman, Peter Henley and Vice Chairman, John Davies presented Graham a tankard and Richard a signed copy of Peter's book entitled "Aber Prom" which is full of illustrations and explores the history of music locally (featuring of course the Brass Band) and its links with entertainment on the promenade from its inception 200 years ago.

Both Graham and Richard received a framed certificate awarding them both the distinction of honorary member in appreciation and recognition of services to the band.

Extended welcome

There will be many students in the brass band world this summer making decisions with regard to which University to study at.  Aberystwyth Silver Band invites anyone considering Aberystwyth University as a potential choice to get in contact with us, the Band has a Student Representative who is happy to answer any questions that you may have, and ALL student players are more than welcome to join.
